Since the Child Nurse Practice Development Initiative began in 2008, a total of 290 nurses have graduated from UCT child nursing programmes: 220 from South Africa, and 70 from 8 other sub-Saharan African countries (Malawi, Kenya, Ghana, Zambia, Botswana, Uganda, Tanzania & Namibia). 161 of these nurses as specialist children’s nurses and 122 as specialist child critical care nurses, all taking valuable knowledge, skills and experience back to their home clinical settings. A further 7 have become Advanced Practice Nurses in Paediatrics.
These numbers represent a graduation rate of 95% and conversely, a minimal attrition rate of 4%.
On their return, a number of graduates have established innovative practice improvement projects and programmes and at least two have received national award nominations for their contribution. Five have been invited to serve on boards and leadership structures representing nursing at national forum in four different countries. 98.5% of international graduates have returned to work in their home clinical settings.
