Care Through Family
What we know: Methods and models which are tailored to the professional and organisational cultures of Europe and America are not always fit for purpose in Africa’s high-demand, lower-resourced health care settings. We need sound models and tools that are conceived, designed, evaluated and implemented with nurses in the continent’s healthcare settings. One example of a promising and innovative local nursing practice is the way that some nurse-led teams involve families in caring for children in hospital.
What we are doing: We have carried out research to observe and document nursing practices in involving families in caring for children in five hospitals in South Africa. We are in the process of publishing this work and will be using what we have learnt as we work with partners in four Best Practice Units.
