Our partnership with Malawi started in 2010 and is based on both establishing new in-country child health training and reviewing workforce development needs. At this time, Malawi had just one registered paediatric nurse, and she was retired. Recognising the country’s great need for more paediatric nurses, the decision was made to start sending registered nurses to Cape Town to study at UCT. By the end of 2015, 29 children’s nurses had been trained at UCT and returned to work in Malawi.
During this time, the Child Nurse Practice Development Initiative partnered with the team at the Kamuzu College of Nursing to establish a new in-country training hub which now has capacity to generate between 50 and 60 children’s nurses each year.

KCN currently runs a Masters programme in Child Health Nursing. Until 2015, the partnership with the Child Nurse Practice Development Initiative allowed their students to complete the clinical component of their training through UCT’s Division of Nursing and Midwifery, whilst they develop their own clinical paediatric course was established.
Maureen and Tiwonge’s visit was to allow them to observe the Child Nurse Practice Development’s clinical education component. Curriculum development has been successful and 2016 onwards, the Masters students will be able to complete all of their training in Malawi.

Visit to Cape Town by Alice Kadango (left) and Ezereth Kabulusi (right) from Kamuzu College of Nursing
We were honoured to host Dr Ezereth Kabulusi and Mrs Alice Kadango for a three week educator internship. This is the first year that the new Child Nursing programmes are being delivered entirely in-country by the teams at Kamuzu College of Nursing and we were delighted to hear how well this is going. Ezereth and Alice were particularly interested to understand the way our educators use group work, case study discussions and other interactive learning approaches to engage students. We had a great exchange of experiences and it was good to have such knowledgeable colleagues observing and feeding back to us on our practices.
