CNPDI has partnered with Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital since 2008, when we sourced funding for the first 2 Kenyan nurses to do a UCT Postgrad Diploma in Critical Care Child Nursing. In 2011 our partnership was further strengthened, through the curriculum development work we did with the Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital’s Institute of Child Health. This resulted in the establishment of their postgraduate diploma programme in Critical Care Child Nursing. Apart from the UCT programme, this is still today the only other Critical Care Child Nursing programme in existence on the continent.
We worked together in 2017 to review both the UCT & Gertrude Children’s Hospital curriculum and have continued to collaborate since. From 2017 – 2019 CNPDI sourced funding for a further 2 children’s nurses from Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital to come as African Paediatric Fellowship Programme (APFP) Nurse Fellows and they completed the UCT Master of Nursing In Child Nursing programme. A third Kenyan nurse (through Kenyan based funding) has also returned home as a qualified Paediatric Advanced Practice Nurse (the qualification received by the Master of Nursing in Child Nursing graduates). She has returned to Moi Teaching Hospital, Eldoret.
Partnership Visit, February 2013
Visit to Cape Town by Conrad Wanyama (far left), Diana Mutwiri (second right) and Pamela Omengo (far right) from Gertrude's Children's Hospital.
Planning to start their own paediatric critical care training programme, these colleagues visited with us to specifically observe the initial few weeks of term for the PG Diploma in Critical Care Child Nursing and to see the clinical environment of the PICU at the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital. They have since developed their curriculum and the course started in 2015.
The Child Nurse Practice Development Initiative is very grateful to our supporters.
