The Child Nurse Practice Development Initiative (CNPDI) is currently a sectoral leader and resource hub capacitating partners in children’s nursing education throughout southern and east Africa. CNPDI’s ultimate vision is of a securely established and mutually supporting community of children’s nurses and educators working to best effect throughout Africa’s health care systems.
In 2015 CNPDI hosted a workshop for children’s nursing educators from across South Africa to support the process of redesigning programmes to meet new national regulatory requirements. This successful session led to requests for another meeting the following year, and another. This annual meeting has become known as the Child Nurse Educators Forum, and has been meeting annually since 2016. In 2017 and 2018 nurses in training at UCT from Namibia and Zambia were able to attend, and we realised how much joint learning was enhanced through the participation of colleagues from other African countries.
The Child Nurse Educator Forum is a key element of the way that we, at CNPDI, support the nursing education institutions that we work with to move towards full sustainability.
The purpose of the Forum is to create a community of practice, enhancing educators’ sense of professional identity and enabling peer and technical support. Facilitated by the Initiative Director/Professor of Child Nursing and supported by members of CNPDI’s education, research and administrative teams, forum members are guided through processes essential to sustainable training, including reviewing recruitment strategies, curriculum reviews, and updating teaching and learning strategies. The Forum is also an important vehicle for advocacy and communications.
