About Us

We are a nurse-led academic unit in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at the University of Cape Town, situated at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. Established in 2008, our initial brief was to re-establish children’s nursing training at the University of Cape Town (UCT). In the ten years since then, this brief has been fulfilled and our scope of activity has broadened to a point where are now a leading partner in building the children’s nursing workforce in Africa.

We build Children’s Nursing for Africa in Africa By:

  1. Training children’s nurses to work to best effect in Africa’s health systems through three specialist education programmes at UCT
  2. Working with educators who train children’s nurses
  3. Working with nurses and teams to work to best effect in Africa’s health systems
  4. Building the evidence base for working to best effect in Africa’s health systems

Since 2008:

Our specific goals are:

1. A strengthened workforce through Child Nursing Education at UCT

2. A strengthened education sector through Education Practice Development

3. Improved outcomes for hospitalised and sick children though Clinical Practice Development

4. Building better evidence for Education, Practice and Policy
